How to Choose Diamond Grinding Wheel for PCD Tools

Polycrystalline diamond (PCD) is a polycrystalline crystal obtained by mixing diamond micronized powder of micron size with a small amount of metal powder (such as cobalt) and sintering at high temperature (1400 ℃) and high pressure (6000 MPa). Compared with other tool materials, PCD has the characteristics of extremely high hardness and wear resistance, high thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion coefficient, low friction coefficient, fast heat dissipation, low cutting temperature, low thermal deformation, and reduced surface roughness. However, PCD has a strong affinity with iron elements, so it is not suitable for processing ferrous metals. The common sharpening processes for PCD cutter include diamond grinding wheel mechanical sharpening, electric discharge sharpening, electrolytic sharpening, etc. Among them, the diamond grinding wheel mechanical sharpening is the most mature technology and it is the most widely used at present. This method has low sharpening efficiency and high processing cost, but good tool edge quality and a complete and smooth tools surface can be obtained.
The particle size, concentration and bond of the diamond grinding wheel have a great influence on the quality and efficiency of the PCD tool sharpening. Then slide the grinding wheel into the grinding wheel adjustment rod and adjust the three balance screws on the side of the grinding wheel to make them evenly distributed until the balance blisters in the balancer are in the center again, and the grinding wheel is balanced.
We should clamp and adjust the PCD tools by swing center and optical center. In order to ensure the machining accuracy requirements of PCD tools, all sharpening dimensions should be completed in one setup. During grinding PCD tools, all wear should be removed. In order to make full use of the grinding ability of the grinding wheel and prevent the occurrence of groove marks, the grinding wheel swing amplitude should be selected according to the PCD tool size.
